Physiotherapist Liz Heeps, who has over 25+ years’ experience working with infants and children, talks tummy time.
What is tummy time?
Tummy time is putting your baby on their tummy when they are awake for short periods of time to begin with and gradually increasing this time. It is best done on a firm solid surface such as a play mat on the floor or can be done across you lap if baby wants the comfort of you being with them.
This position helps your baby develop strength in their neck and back muscles that they need to roll over, sit up, and eventually crawl and walk. It also helps prevent baby developing flat areas on their head. Babies that don’t spend enough time on their tummies can take longer to achieve their gross motor milestones.
You can make this more enjoyable for your baby by putting toys within reach, having a non-breakable mirror for them to look into, or a rolled up towel under their chest to help them initially.
Remember to always put baby to sleep on their back – never on their tummy or side.
