Physioworks Health Group Physiotherapist Amy Shipperd was recently an Australian team physio at the 2026 Virtus European Summer Games in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The Virtus Games brings together athletes with intellectual impairment from across the world to compete in a range of sports, including tennis.
Over many years, Amy Shipperd has worked as an onsite physiotherapist at numerous national & international tennis tournaments. Amy works with able-bodied players, as well as athletes with impairment at these elite athlete tennis events.
The Australian tennis team had a strong showing with plenty of good wins across the Virtus Games summer tournament.
From a physio perspective, Amy reports that the event mostly ran smoothly. Amy was responsible for leading the athletes in daily warm-ups, treating players as needed between matches, running post-match recovery sessions, and managing any injuries.
With over 25+ years’ experience playing, and as an accredited tennis coach, Amy was also able to spend some time coaching on court at the Virtus Games – as well as working as the team physio! In this competition, coaches are allowed to sit courtside with players during matches and provide coaching throughout play, so it was a great opportunity for Amy to support the athletes as a physio – and as a coach!
