Physioworks Health Group Director & leading Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist Andrew Dalwood (FACP)* discusses winter injuries & offers some advice about how to prevent & avoid them.

Winter injuries – What are they? Why do they occur?

I classify three key reasons that typically create the winter injuries that present regularly at Physioworks Health Group at this time of year. Today let’s look at the second of these:

Alpine Sport Injuries

Snow is starting to fall and alpine winter sports, such as skiing, & snowboarding, will soon be in full swing.

But are you ready for skiing? Did you “get fit to ski’?

Every winter, the Physioworks team see numerous “snow” cases present with post-skiing injuries.

Most have not prepared for the different stresses and the extended use of many dormant muscles that a long day on the slopes (and skis) Those dormant muscles become over worked, over stressed, leading to injury.

Are you ready for your winter alpine sports adventure?

Prepare. In the weeks leading up to heading to the slopes (and before each session on the slopes) prepare with appropriate exercise, such as leg strengthening with squats, lunges, calf raises and tuck jumps; do general leg stretching and back stretches/lumber rolls.

Members of the team at Physioworks Health Group  can assist you. Talk to the physiotherapy & allied health care at your preferred Physioworks clinic to help prevent & manage your winter sport injury.
