Physioworks Health Group Director and Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist* Andrew Dalwood has co-authored a recently published research study on Knee Pain.

The results of the research study, “Internet-Delivered Exercise and Pain-Coping Skills Training for Knee Pain”, have been published in Annals of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians.

The objective of the study, headed by the University of Melbourne, was to evaluate the effectiveness of Internet-delivered, physiotherapist-prescribed home exercise and pain-coping skills training (PCST); in persons aged 50 years or older who have chronic knee pain.

Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist* Andrew Dalwood was involved in the development of the exercise protocol used in the Knee Pain research and the study design.

148 Australian based patients were involved in the study, including selective patients from the Physioworks Health Group.  Sports Physiotherapist Brad Fernihough (Physioworks Camberwell) and Physiotherapist Christopher Snell (Waverley Park Physiotherapy Centre) delivered the exercise intervention for these patients.

The conclusion from the study are that for persons with chronic knee pain, Internet-delivered, physiotherapist-prescribed exercise and PCST ensures clinically meaningful improvements in pain and function that are sustained for at least 6 months.

Andrew Dalwood said the outcome from the study highlights the effectiveness which low cost interventions, such as home-based exercise delivered over the internet, can have in not only keeping our ageing communities active, but also in assisting the elderly with controlling some health care costs. “And our involvement in this type of cutting edge research also ensures that the Physioworks Health Group, and our physiotherapy professionals, are at the forefront of treatment management excellence” added Andrew.
