What Is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist
Physiotherapists are acknowledged experts in the management of musculoskeletal problems, injury and post operative rehabilitation and spinal pain. However, it is important to be aware that there are differing levels of expertise within the physiotherapy profession.
There are currently three levels of clinical expertise within musculoskeletal physiotherapy: generalist physiotherapists with an interest in musculoskeletal therapy, musculoskeletal physiotherapists, and Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists.
Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists have undertaken advanced, intensive training, have studied the latest evidence-based research and undergone rigorous examinations to be awarded Fellowship in the Australian College of Physiotherapists (FACP). Accordingly, Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists are recognised by the profession as having the highest level of musculoskeletal skills and as industry leaders in the management of musculoskeletal problems.
Specialists often work with medical practitioners and other physiotherapists to develop advanced diagnoses and management plans and ongoing rehabilitation. The skill of the Specialist lies in the ability to assess, treat and manage complex, difficult and, at times, multifactorial musculoskeletal problems. They will liaise with the referring health professional and work both with them and the client to ensure the best possible outcome.
Specialists may be requested to provide an expert opinion to a medical practitioner or in medico-legal proceedings and are perfectly placed to provide a well-considered evaluation of complex cases.
Currently, there are approximately 100 Specialist Physiotherapists in Australia, eight of whom are practicing Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists in Victoria, two of whom (David Francis F.A.C.P. and Andrew Dalwood F.A.C.P.) are the principals of Physioworks Camberwell.
David and Andrew have established Physioworks Camberwell to provide an outstanding level of Specialist and general physiotherapy service to the inner south eastern suburbs. Their aim is to provide patients, doctors, health professionals, insurers, and legal practitioners with advanced, specific expertise for musculoskeletal problems, utilising the best evidence available to them as Specialist practitioners.
