Pilates (Pi-lart-ees) was developed in the 1920’s by legendary physical trainer Joseph Pilates. Initially utilised by dancers and performers, the popularity of Pilates has grown over the last decade to become a popular mainstream mode of exercise.
Pilates involves a series of controlled movements/exercises that engage the body and mind performed on specifically designed pieces of equipment, with a focus on improving flexibility, muscle recruitment and control, stability, strength, and posture. Pilates is excellent for the novice and athlete alike.
Available at Physioworks Health Group Camberwell, Clinical Pilates is a specialised specific form of Pilates run by specially-trained physiotherapists. It focuses on improving core stability, posture, balance, control, strength and flexibility through low-impact equipment and floor based exercises. It is often used as a rehabilitation tool for injury management.
The Clinical Pilates approach modifies traditional pilates repertoires according to the latest spinal stability research and evidence and is better suited to address injury/dysfunction. Pathology (i.e injury) is generally both load sensitive and direction sensitive so while the multi-directional approach of traditional pilates may provoke symptoms, the clinical pilates approach uses a directional preference (e.g flexion, extension, or off-centre) via exercise modification which allows optimal muscle activity. Individualised exercises, prescribed after assessment by a physiotherapist, ensures appropriately sequenced, controlled activation of the deep stabilizers of the back and abdominal region (“the core”) reducing chronic back or neck pain and optimizes muscle recruitment. This stabilizes the torso and allows stable movement and constant flow of movement.
Clinical Pilates is also effective when traditional treatments for musculoskeletal injury have not succeeded. Recent research has shown that specific exercise programs designed and supervised by specialists, such as physiotherapists, are the most effective with injury management of problems such as tendonitis, muscle strains and back pain.
Clinical Pilates maybe used by the Physioworks Health Group physiotherapy team to:
- reduce pain, especially back and neck pain
